When You're the One Who Looks Like the Problem in Your Marriage

blog - real talk Aug 13, 2026

For a long time, I was the one who looked like the problem in my own marriage.

I want to tell you the truth about that, because I think a lot of women are living inside it right now and blaming themselves for it.

My husband would go quiet in the middle of something hard. Not the everyday kind of quiet. The kind that changes the air in a room. And I would move toward it the only way I knew how. I would talk more. Explain more. Ask what was wrong, then ask again. My voice would climb, because underneath it I was scared, and I just wanted him back with me.

Here is the part that broke my heart for years. By the time anyone else noticed what was happening, they didn't see his silence. They saw me. Worked up. Chasing a calm man across the kitchen. He looked steady. I looked like the one making the scene.

That is a specific kind of lonely. You can be the person holding your whole family together, doing the emotional work no one sees, and still be the one who gets read as difficult. As too much. As the reason things feel hard.

What was actually happening

It took me a long time, and a lot of learning about trauma, to understand what his silence really was.

When my husband shut down, he was not ignoring me. He was not punishing me. His nervous system had dropped into survival mode to keep him safe, the same way it had learned to a long time before he ever met me. In that state, almost nothing gets through. Not reassurance, not logic, not love delivered at volume.

So every time I pushed harder to reach him, I was pushing against a body that had already left the room. The harder I tried, the further gone he went. And to anyone watching, including sometimes the people closest to us, the escalation looked like it belonged to me.

I was not too much. I was a woman trying to reach someone who could not be reached in that moment. And it was never mine to fix by trying harder.

That reframe did not fix my marriage overnight. What it did was give me somewhere to stand. Instead of absorbing the silence as a verdict on me, I could remind myself that his shutdown was about his history, not my worth. From that footing, I could stop chasing and start choosing what I did next.

If you are living this, hold onto these

  • You did not cause the silence.
  • His shutting down is protection, not rejection of you.
  • You are not too much for wanting to be reached.
  • Stepping back when he is heightened is not abandoning him. It is the one move that lowers the heat for both of you.

None of that means you stop caring. It means you stop pouring yourself out against a wall and calling the exhaustion love.

The part nobody tells you

I will not pretend this heals in a straight line, because mine didn't.

This work moves like a roller coaster, not a staircase. There were stretches where I thought we had finally found steady ground, and then one hard week would knock us back to what felt like the very beginning. I would lie awake thinking, are we really starting over. Did I imagine the progress.

We weren't starting over. A hard week is not a failed marriage. A setback is not the story reversing. It took me the better part of eight years to stop reading every low moment as proof that I had ruined something, and to see it instead as one dip on a longer road we were still walking together.

If you are in one of those dips right now, please don't let it convince you that you are back at zero. You are not. You are further down the road than the woman who first felt this, and you are still moving.

You do not have to lose yourself to love him through this. You never did.

With love, Danielle ๐Ÿ’›

If this put words to something you have been carrying, I would love to hear the moment you keep getting stuck in. It is the kind of thing I build everything I teach around.
