From Explosion to Empowerment: Danette Haag on Scars, Self-Worth, and Healing Relationships

tv show Jun 14, 2025

Trauma changes us. It leaves scars—both visible and invisible—that can feel overwhelming. But what we choose to do with those scars can transform not only our lives but the lives of those around us. That’s why I’m so excited to share my interview with Danette Haag on Love and Trauma: The Real Deal.

Danette is a survivor in every sense of the word. After surviving a house explosion that left her with severe scars, she didn’t let her trauma define her. Instead, she used it as fuel to rebuild her life, becoming the first severely scarred woman crowned Mrs. Colorado 2021, a trauma mentor, and a mindset coach.

Her story is powerful, raw, and full of hope. Here’s a glimpse into what we discussed during our conversation.

Learning to Face Emotional Hurdles

Danette grew up in a culture where emotions weren’t openly discussed, which made her journey to healing even more complex. The shame and fear tied to her scars were a heavy burden to carry, but Danette found a way to release them.

“I had to learn to see my scars as symbols of strength, not shame,” she told me.

Through therapy, self-reflection, and intentional work, Danette found the courage to break free from the silence and embrace vulnerability as a tool for healing.

Pageantry as a Platform for Healing

For Danette, entering beauty pageants wasn’t just about competing—it was about transforming her own perception of beauty.

“Pageantry became my platform for healing and empowerment. It wasn’t just about beauty; it was about redefining what beauty means,” she explained.

Winning the title of Mrs. Colorado 2021 was about so much more than the crown. It was a testament to her resilience and a beacon of hope for others with scars, showing that beauty is found in strength and authenticity.

Healing Through Self-Worth

Danette shared how her journey of self-healing extended to her relationships. Before she could truly connect with others, she had to prioritize her own self-worth.

“I had to find myself first before I could show up fully in my relationships,” she said.

Her story is a reminder that healthy relationships start with setting boundaries, knowing your value, and being your own biggest cheerleader.

Transforming Trauma Into Triumph

What inspires me most about Danette’s journey is how she transformed her trauma into a tool for growth. Her memoir, Beauty From Ashes: Transforming Wounds into Wisdom, Scars into Stars, is a beautiful example of how we can take the hardest moments in life and turn them into something meaningful.

Her story reminds us all that healing isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about owning it and using it to create a brighter future.

Lessons to Take With You

Danette’s story is packed with wisdom and hope. Here are just a few takeaways that I hope stick with you:

  1. Your scars are part of your strength: They tell the story of everything you’ve overcome.
  2. Healing takes time and honesty: It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
  3. Invest in your self-worth: The most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one with yourself.
  4. Surround yourself with support: No one should have to heal alone.
  5. Celebrate your wins, big or small: Every step forward matters.
